Most municipalities require a permit before an exterior sign can be installed. Typically, garage sale signs, residential real estate signs and political signs are exempted, but almost all others – including building signs, promotional signs and monument signs require sign permits. Illuminated signs may also need electrical permits, while canopies and other signage solutions can require large and more detailed building permits.
